Petition: PETITION FOR REDUCTION OF SPEED ON TOWN OF MALTA ROADWAYS

Together we forced positive changes to the roundabout construction project in Malta on Roundlake Road. These changes have made a difference and we know with your help we can take the next step to ask NYS to lower the speed limit. Please sign the petition below!

To:       Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor, State of New York

Mr. Matthew J. Driscoll, Commissioner, NYS Department of Transportation

Mr. Hugh T. Farley, Senator, District 49, NYS Senate

Ms. Carrie Woerner, District 113, NYS Assembly

Mr. Keith R. Manz, Commissioner, Saratoga County Dept. of Public Works

Town Supervisor and Council Members, Town of Malta

Mr. Roger W. Crandall, Highway Superintendent, Town of Malta

We the residents of New York State do respectfully request the following speed reductions on the highways in the vicinity of the two new roundabouts in southern Town of Malta.  The plea is in the interest of safety and resulting from known unsafe speed conditions.  Our request is explained in the following paragraphs:

The two Roundabouts on Round Lake Road in the Town of Malta, Saratoga County, New York opened for traffic on Sunday, October 4, 2015.  We the residents of the local area have been patiently enduring the transition of this highway and have been suffering with the unsafe speeds on the surrounding roads.  We have had one near accident involving an occupied school bus and several pedestrians nearly struck by motorists traveling at unreasonable speeds.  The posted speed limit on Round Lake Road is 45mph on the western portion and 40mph extending just east of Chango Drive to the Northway Interstate.  The speed limit for each roundabout is designed for 15 mph and reducing the speed on the roads entering and exiting would aid in pedestrian safety. This speed reduction request is a high priority with the daily volume of pedestrians and the increased motor vehicle traffic on all surrounding roads

The specific roads and the recommended reduction of speed in the existing zones is outlined below:

Round Lake Road – from East Line Road to Interstate 87 from 45/40mph to 30mph

Miller Road –  from 40mph to 30 mph

South Ruhle Road – from 40mph to 30mph

Raylinski Road – from 40mph to 30mph

We the undersigned respectfully request the aforementioned speed reductions in the interest of safety:

I lived on Miller Rd for many years and have witnessed people driving too fast. It is no longer a rural road but one with many houses and children at play.

As a resident living off Round Lake Road in Malta and between the two new roundabouts on that road, I request that you give serious consideration to lowering the speed limit on the roads listed in this petition.

The roads through Malta that lead to Rte 9, especially in the area of Globalfoundries, are increasingly being used by motorists intent on passing through the area as quickly as possible, often making it hazardous for buses, both school and commuter, as well as those traveling by bicycle, foot and car to shop at local businesses. A lower speed limit combined with the continued monitoring by law enforcement would go a long way to make this area safer for pedistrians and residents.

The people of these neighborhoods did not purchase their respective properties expecting massive government subsidies to do what freedom would never have done to their neighborhoods. Now instead of quite side roads, they have busy roads the can’t even walk on.

I would definitely like to see the speed limit on Round Lake Road as well as the speed limit on the side roads feeding into Round Lake Road reduced to 30 mph due to safety concerns.

I frequently walk with my children on the sidewalk from our development in Avendale to Stewart’s and Hannaford. People drive WAY TO FAST on Ruhle Road and it has become increasingly dangerous to walk the path. If something is not done about this soon, my fear is that someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed by a speeding car. I have spoken several times to the Malta town office and they continue to say “I will pass your concern along to supervisors office”. It Seems like this is something that should be EASILY resolved and shouldn’t require as much effort as it has! I absolutely agree the speed limit on Ruhle should be reduced to 30 mph.

How about adding the restriping of the crosswalks on Chengo at the Hannaford and Wandering Stream intersection? Also, if this passes, who is going to enforce the speed limits? No one was out there, when Round Lake Road was closed. People were taking these side roads all summer, and it was like a speedway!

It is about time that the DOT put safety first. The roads mentioned in this petition are within residential areas and the suggested speed reductions need to reflect this. There are many residents with young children that live along these roads. I expect our elected officials to take the lead and ensure that the residents supporting this petition are listened to.

We just moved to Raylinsky Rd and view vehicles fly on it.
