Are Roundabouts Really Safe?

This past September a tractor trailer rolled over while navigating an exit 12 roundabout. It flipped onto the sidewalk after the rear wheels drove over the center apron. The center apron is designed for use by the tractor trailers, but due to the "calming effect" of the "S" curve design entering into the circle, tractor trailers are routinely overturning (particularly tankers). It would be horrible if one of these semi's turned over when the children were walking on the new sidewalk...
