Citizens Against Proposed Exit 11 Roundabouts

To Malta Town Council: Paul Sausville, Tara Thomas, Maggie Ruisi, Peter Klotz and John Hartzell

For over a year the people of Malta have spoken out loud in opposition to the construction of roundabouts on the Round Lake Road Corridor. We have made it clear that we prefer the traffic light controlled intersections and turning lanes which are safer for pedestrians, our children and seniors while also being less expensive.

We ask you again to stand with the people you are elected to serve, to protect the public good and to reject the confiscation of citizen's property for sub-standard, non-conforming roundabouts that jeopardize our citizen's safety and split up our neighborhoods.

We the undersigned will be holding you accountable for your actions.

After several Northway accidents recently , I have seen how constant traffic through roundabouts has favored the heavy flowing lanes and has hindered traffic from entering the roundabouts at Route 9 and Route 67 . The cars in the roundabouts have not allowed cars to enter .

When hundreds of residents feel like their concerns have been ignored, their opinions don’t matter and their property is not longer safe from seizure, we have failed as a democracy. I oppose any public project where the end result is hundreds of residents feeling like the government will do whatever it wants, regardless of local opposition. I’ve spent a lot of time talking with residents in this neighborhood and they are clear and unified in their opposition. Our Town government needs to listen to our citizens!

I absolutely do NOT believe roundabouts are safer than traffic lights and turning lanes. I have lived in Malta for 42 years and I drive around Malta daily. I have been involved in many more near-miss accidents since the 13 roundabouts were constructed than before the roundabouts were built. Roundabouts are also dangerous for pedestrians as the traffic never stops, thus never giving the pedestrians an opportunity to safely cross the road. Exit 12 is a disaster. Please, no more roundabouts.

I believe round abouts move traffic faster and safer but have real concerns about crosswalks within the roundabouts being so close to the circles . I believe they need to be re-engineered for safer walking traffic, more data and engineering must be done.

more could be done instead of adding circles, like connecting round lake bypass road to the northway

It’s has been proven that roundabouts lead to more accidents and congestion so for any council-member or community member to support this project would be the support of something which endangers our community and makes it less efficient.

I would like to ask how you feel round abouts are safe for pedestrians? When I drive through the ones at exit 12 I know I do not look for walkers or riders. I’m always my left for oncoming traffic. I can assure you this will happen at exit 11 as well and not just by me. I see people speeding through these all the time. Do we really think 1 person being hit was worth it? I mean so ppeople can get home an extra 5 minutes earlier. What if it was you or your family trying to cross the street to get an ice cream cone? Oh wait nevermind you don’t live in the area so you won’t be affected. Those of us who do live and are worried don’t want these things. Open you ears and listen to the community, we are speaking and we deserve to be heard.

I drive through that area a lot, and do NOT see the need for roundabouts!

There are places where a roundabout is the best solution. These two intersections are not those places. Congestion is only a problem at peak commute times and a turning lane would allow through traffic to continue. Most times the simple solution is the best. Listen to the people who drive the road everyday.

I lived in Fonda-Fultonville for almost eight years, roundabouts in the UK are like a cancer, once one gets built there’s no stopping them and yes I speak from experience as I now live back in Scotland. The government want all cars to be as economical on petrol as possible but keep building roundabouts to slow traffic flow therefore it seems to me that roundabouts are counter productive to petrol economy.

I commute approximately six miles to my job in which there are EIGHT roundabouts and at each of them I have to slow down to approximately five mph.

Please have a rethink on these blots on the landscape, most Americans have never experienced roundabouts and don’t know what they are letting themselves in for.

    Drive safe.

Maybe we could learn from others mistakes

Roundabouts are dangerous; just ask New Jersey

    Published: August 24, 2012

The lead article in The Citizens’ Voice of August 19, “Businesses fear roundabout plan,” shows that PennDOT does not learn from the mistakes of others. Not only will construction of this roundabout strangle local businesses by limiting access. The roundabout itself will create a serious traffic hazard due to the volume of traffic in that area and the unfamiliarity of most drivers with such intersections.

In the 1920s and ’30s, the New Jersey Department of Transportation was enamored of traffic circles. (They do not use the quaint British term “roundabout” there.) More than sixty of them were built throughout that state to speed the flow of traffic through intersections on busy roads.

As traffic volume increased over the years, these circles became deathtraps, confusing motorists who drive through them. Among the worst were the Airport Circle in Pennsauken at the junction of Routes 30, 38, and 130, the Green Street Circle in Woodbridge at Green Street and Route 25 (now U.S. Route 1), and the Eatontown Circle at the junction of Routes 35 and 36.

After numerous accidents, some of them fatal, NJDOT replaced the Green Street Circle and the Eatontown Circle with standard signalized intersections. The Airport Circle remains a very dangerous place that should be avoided if at all possible.

Only 24 traffic circles remain in New Jersey and most of these are being removed, signalized, or modified.

Before importing these traffic hazards to Pennsylvania, the decision makers at PennDOT should take a ride across the Delaware River. Let them try the Airport Circle or take a ride to Flemington to navigate the circle at the junction of Routes 12, 31, and 202. NJDOT is adding traffic lights to make the Flemington circle somewhat less hazardous.

Save the $3.5 million and leave the traffic lights alone in Dallas. If they are contributing to traffic delays, perhaps the timing should be adjusted.

We don’t need to waste American tax payer money on things that local Exit 11 American citizens don’t want nor need. This is about Public Safety. Roundabouts are dangerous for pedistrians, bicyclists and cause more minor accidents than desired traffic liights, extra turn lanes, and push button cross walks. Stop the roundabouts in our American lands around Exit 11. Stop the roundabouts!! Can you hear us comic villian roundabouts P. (PLAN) Sausville??

I am not against roundabouts, just the ones proposed at Round Lake Rd and Ruhle and at Round Lake Rd and Chango Dr. I don’t believe roundabouts should be in residential/heavily peopled areas. Roundabouts at highway entrances and exits work well with traffic flow.

I would like the possibility of my children being able to bike to school. If there is a rotary, I cannot see there being a safe way for them to get across the street. We need turning lanes and pedestrian crossings with lights, not a rotary.

This round about is not the answer to the traffic problem on Exit 11. Please reconsider

the option proprosed by us whose family and children deserve safety as first priority

and not the whims of the town board.
